Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Ourselves Progress Effectively) is designed as an alternative educational setting for Jasper County students whose needs are not currently being met in our traditional classroom setting. Students on expelled status currently undergoing the due process procedure for expulsion are NOT ELIGIBLE for Project H.O.P.E. These students will continue to be served through the existing Out-of-School Suspension and Expulsion Programs.
Project Hope Alternative School
Program Information
1- Detailed description of the program intervention, target population, and target setting, how students are identified for placement into the program. Project Hope Alternative School provides an educational environment for students’ grades 6 through 12 who, for academic or behavioral reasons have difficulty benefiting from the traditional school setting. Students are placed in the alternative school as a result of failure to comply with school district policies and violations of the South Carolina Safe Schools Act. Students receive specialized attention that place a great emphasis on small classrooms, high teacher-to-student ratios, individualized instruction, and noncompetitive performance assessments.
2-What determines the length of their stay in the program? The length of time that students remain in the program is determined by a Tribunal Court decision along with the cooperation of both student and parent.
3-Detailed information on the research methodology used to evaluate the program's effectiveness.
The methodology that is used to evaluate the program’s effectiveness is the utilization of formative and summative evaluations, and end of year program evaluations as prescribed by The State Department of Education.
4-Detailed information on the evaluation outcomes and findings, including findings on research objectives and performance. The aforementioned evaluations provide feedback and an analysis of the extent to which program goals and objectives have been met.
-Instructional Program & Curriculum:
1-An explanation of the instructional program for the alternative school.
The instructional program at the alternative school provides specialized support services that address the academic, social, and behavioral needs of all students. Students have remediation opportunities, they can receive credit recovery, students utilize web based software to enhance instruction, they receive counseling that helps to improve self-esteem, social skills, and reduce disruptive behaviors. The curriculum of this program addresses state standards, and upon graduation students earn a state-approved high school diploma.
2-What curriculum is used when the students are in the program?
The faculty and staff at the alternative school utilize the JCSD Adopted Curriculum which correlates and is aligned with South Carolina State Standards. Along with the core courses we also use technology to enrich instruction. We utilize cooperative learning, small group instruction, one-on-one tutoring, self-paced technology based training, guided observation, and graphic organizers to enhance and enrich teaching.
3-Does the program have certified teachers?
The program has two full time certified teachers and two part time certified teachers.
4-What subjects do they teach? Full time teachers provide instruction in math and English language. Part time teachers instruct in social studies and science.
5-Does the program just provide CORE Academic content, or does it offer elective such as art, music, pe. Foreign language!
