Welcome to second grade! In second grade, we are excited about learning and believe that all students can succeed in school. We always welcome visitors in our classroom and are of the firm belief that involved parents in their child’s educational career will make for involved children in education. We have some exciting units of study in second grade and are looking forward to our celebratory days throughout the year. December: Holidays Around the World January: 100th Day Celebration February: WSAV field trip March: Dr. Seuss Day April: Charleston Aquarium field trip In Language Arts, students will learn about main idea, summarizing text, analyzing plot points in a story, and how to obtain information from informational text. We will also be learning about antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, nouns, verbs, and adjectives. In writing, we will be focusing on complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation. We will also be learning about how to write a paragraph with beginning, middle, and end points. For our novel units throughout the year, we will be focusing on: The Leaving Morning, Kisses for Little Bear, Frog and Toad, Amelia Bedelia, and Polar Bears Past Bedtime. Mathematics will focus around several units. Students will learn: how to add and subtract double digit numbers with regrouping, how to graph data, how to tell time and will learn elapsed time, and how to classify 2 and 3D geometric shapes. Science is separated into four units of study. Our first unit deals with balancing and weighing, along with magnetism. Our second unit is changes, dealing with matter and solids and liquids. The third unit of study deals with weather and the fourth unit will focus on animals. Social Studies in second grade will revolve around learning about our community, our government, and our geographic landscape. |
