During the first semester, in math, the first grade will work on number sense, addition and subtraction of numbers up to twenty, place value, odd and even numbers, and calendar skills.  By December 1st, the students are expected to learn all the addition facts with sums < 20.

In language arts, we will work on recognition of high frequency words, fluency in reading, letter sounds, using pictures and words to construct meaning, and demonstration of comprehension.  We will also work on composition of simple sentences and stories.  Science and social studies will be integrated into language arts.

Parents are urged to listen to their children read for at least 20 minutes every night.  Ask occasional questions to check their understanding of what they are reading.  We ask that parents read their children’s library books to them each week.  The more they read or are read to, the better readers they will become.
